Banyak cuti? X layak dapat bonus RM700?

During the second week of school reopening, I walked into the most challenging class of the year. From far away, I could already hear a ruckus & it didn't die down even when I could be seen from the windows. My heart dropped as I wondered if they would be willing to learn from me today.

When I walked in, I was practically ignored as the boys continued yapping away loudly in a circle & walked about the class freely as if the teacher was invisible. I stood there for the next 5 minutes feeling exactly the way I felt for the last 2 years trying to teach them remotely, like 🦗🦗🦗🦗.

Putting on a strong front while wanting to cry, I mustered a stern voice calling for their attention. It must have been a very important discussion, as they were clearly unhappy at being interrupted & asked to return to their seats, banging furniture & displaying clear dissatisfaction.

Since it was their first day back, I didn't want to antagonize them. I moved on to facilitate an interactive activity where they expressed their hopes for the remaining academic year. This was when things went from bad to worse.

Through random selection, the most rebellious student was called upon to read the hopes of a classmate of his choosing. He chose one from a classmate who struggles academically & started laughing hysterically at every word, in one fell swoop, belittling both the dignity of a fellow English learner & the authority of his English teacher.

Even after being respectfully told off repeatedly, he wouldn't stop laughing. The worse part was the rest of the class laughed along with his theatrics. I resisted my rage & an urge to put everyone in their place, as that wouldn't be the right play on a person who clearly is asserting his claim on being top dog in the class.

When his prank showed no signs of subsiding, I stopped him & told him to wait outside, which he did. Then, the class was dead silent. It was then I realized that I had control over the rest of the students, so I started to reason with them.

"Very funny, right? This piece of paper might not seem like much to you. But it represents the hope of one person in this room. Hopes! Do you like it when other people laugh at your hopes? Then why did you laugh at this one?" I said in BM & saw a lightbulb moment take place. After sternly espousing their need to support each other rather than belittle each other, I noticed that the defiant look had also disappeared from the face of the boy standing outside.

"Are you ready to be serious?" I asked the boy after I was done. He nodded & the activity proceeded accordingly as well as the planned lesson for the day. Neither were there any further problems from this class for the rest of the week.

Have you been through a similar situation? Do share!
If you were in my shoes, how would you have handled this?

Jarod Yonghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15461649372779136460noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-23327040.post-36245309754712300142021-11-01T13:36:00.014+08:002021-11-08T02:02:26.655+08:00Menghargai Jasa Rakan Guru Cat Semula Dewan Sekolah

Tengok betul-betul, guys. My students have less than 4 months before their SPM & many do not have access to tuition or educational support aside from what they get from school. Meanwhile, we need to be cognizant of their mental well-being & ease their return to school. Many admitted to not studying at all during the MCO.

I've slowed down the pace in my lessons & avoided putting pressure on my kids. I'm figuring out how to make lessons a little more interactive while adhering to SOPs. Will share my ideas here when I can. Used to be I didn't take photos of my activities. Then, I got accused of not doing HIP because I didn't have "evidence" published on Google Sites for "pemantauan jarak jauh."

Still not doing Google Sites, because it's not my job to help the pemantau. It's actually their job to help me, or am I working for communists? I'm already losing my mind trying to impact my kids. If you don't want to help, just leave us alone please. I need to keep my priorities straight. If they want evidence, I'll share on Instagram & Facebook so fellow teachers can chime in & improve the ideas.

1) In this SPM-based Reading lesson, while answering the questions, students choose 1 new word from each question. If we addressed every new word, we won't finish until the next day. Let students decide. If they chose the words, wouldn't they pay more attention to the explanations?

2) Divide the board into 8 sections, one for each question. Students choose 3 words from their list & take turns to write them in the respective sections.

3) While/before/after going through the reading passage, discuss the new vocabulary. You may also address key vocabuary during the discussion. Students are expected to note down definitions/translations in their books/worksheets.

How do you address new vocabulary in your lessons? Do share!

Jarod Yonghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15461649372779136460noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-23327040.post-91517526458557126372021-10-18T13:56:00.001+08:002021-11-08T02:10:27.469+08:00My Hopes: Speaking Activity Featuring Sticky Notes

What did you do during your first class?

First thing I did with my classes is to get them to think forward. When I first learned about this event, I knew that it would be a golden opportunity for my students as the organizers have an excellent track record & will actually give you funds to run your innovative project. However, every student I pitched from my own classes turned me down. I even reached out to those who did not attend my PdPR. No luck there.

Thus, I asked my colleagues for recommendations. Messaged & called each one of those students. Got turned down again & again. Wasted time, money, & ... mostly hope. Even teachers' kids turned me down or worse... didn't pick up/read messages. I wondered if I was actually the village idiot?

It was only very close to the closing date that I was able to get 4 students to say yes. So these 4 angels who said yes... they mean so so much to me.

During the 4-month long camp, there were plenty of technical issues, data credit habis, laptop rosak, family conflicts, etc. 4 entire Saturday mornings (3-hour workshops), & several afternoons & evenings (meetings) were sacrificed to come up with a plan & a pitch.

But, the girls still came out on top & delivered on their assignments. Anyway, they had a great mentor, Aaron, who was super patient & helpful. I hope the execs at Accenture reading this gives him a promotion. You won't regret it.

Before you say cikgu makan gaji buta waktu MCO & add to the online toxicity. Listen to our stories & support our good work. Many of us go above & beyond.

Congratulations to Marsha, Najihah, Adriana, & Hazellyn (The Sarawak Girls) who won the Innovation Award during the Student Leadership Camp organized by Teach For Malaysia & Accenture.

I arrived at Dewan Suarah Kota Samarahan at 10am &, by 10.15am, I was already vaccinated. Everything was organized & very professional. I never felt uncomfortable & was very confident with the way that things were run.

What I needed:
(1) My IC
(2) Smartphone with MySejahtera app installed & logged in
(3) a pen

Firstly, I checked in with the MySejahtera app with one of the many QR codes plastered all over the entrance area. Next, there was a short wait to present my IC, have my attendance taken & be given a consent form to fill.

Once the form was signed & having consented to be vaccinated, I was moved into the hall for a short wait to be entered into the system. I presented my IC & the signed consent form. Then, I scanned a QR code with the MySejahtera app & was asked a few questions like my name & profession to confirm my identity/attendance.

Later, I was waiting to be vaccinated. Inside the fully-enclosed & private booths, I scanned another QR code with the MySejahtera app to confirm that I had received the vaccine. The physician took my consent form, confirmed my name with me, & proceeded with the jab into my left arm, which took less than 10 seconds to administer. I was pleasantly surprised at how quick & seamless the entire process was.

I was given a copy of my consent form, moved on to another waiting area & gave the copy to another counter of volunteers. I had to wait 15 minutes just in case adverse symptoms manifested. Meanwhile, we were given a briefing about what to expect & other necessary information.

Alhamdulilah, I was fine so after my name was called, I collected my copy of my consent form with a vaccination reminder card stapled onto it. In & out in 30 minutes. Terbaik!

Was it painful? Yes. It was more painful than expected. My upper arm was extremely sore after the injection. Nonetheless, I still had full use of my arm. The pain subsided after 1 hour & I was completely fine after that. The chairs provided in the hall were cushioned & comfortable. The air conditioning was nice and cool too.

Overall, I had a very positive experience. I hope this sharing has allayed any doubts or fears you have about getting vaccinated. I never felt uncomfortable or unwelcome during my experience. I'm sure yours will be just as smooth, inshaallah.

A big thank you to all the medical staff, volunteers, & everyone involved. I appreciate your efforts & professionalism. God bless you & let's win this fight against COVID-19.

Jarod Yonghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15461649372779136460noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-23327040.post-34555824429276425482021-06-03T21:25:00.004+08:002021-06-03T21:25:42.431+08:00Cikgu Lian Fee Choo: Winner of Anugerah Guru Inspirasi McDonald's 2021

The story that inspired me the most: Cikgu Lian Fee Choo

Needing a little bit of motivation after my struggles as a PDPR teacher, I looked at a few of the stories from this year’s recently announced Anugerah Guru Inspirasi McDonald’s winners. While reading the story of Mr Kalai at SK Nanga Tau, Bintulu, I smiled at the thought that there are great teachers like him in the heartlands of my ibu pertiwiku.

Additionally, I was thoroughly impressed with Ms Ling Fong of SMK Datuk Peter Mojuntin, Penampang, who brilliantly set up a shadow theater so that her deaf students could communicate with a panel of hearing judges. Following that competition, her students were recognized for their talents & invited to perform at events!

However, the story that inspired me the most was one of a principal at SMK Kemabong in Tenom, Sabah. How refreshing to read about a leader in the civil service who walks the talk & does not lead from an armchair. Therefore, it is no wonder that she played a significant role in uplifting the school from one of the worst 20 schools in Sabah into the top 100 during her decade-long tenure.

Besides personally mentoring high-potential students, she is also one of the few principals I know who still teaches, and Form 5 SPM classes at that. Principals usually pass the responsibility of teaching classes onto a teacher. Talk about leading the charge! No wonder their exam results shot through the roof resulting an overall improvement as well as several straight A students, an mind-blowing achievement for a rural school.

In the words of the teacher who nominated her, “orangnya bertubuh langsing, tinggi, berjalan dengan langkah yang cukup yakin dan aura positif yang sentiasa terserlah.” Notice the mention of “aura positif.” How many school leaders have that? A presence that invigorates colleagues in a positive way rather than strikes fear in their hearts. Imagine students learning & teachers innovating under this aura, rather than needing to watch our backs in a toxic culture of “cari kesalahan.” Honestly, the results speak for themselves.

I really hope to meet her one day so I can be a conduit for this positive aura. After all, monkey see, monkey do. It is really hard for teachers to project something that they have not experienced before. I for one want to walk in her footsteps. What she poetically said is very true, “do good and leave behind a virtue that the storm of time can never destroy.”

Thank you for your service, Mdm Lian Fee Choo. Although I have never served under you, I respect you for being the leader that we need to transform education in Malaysia. However, students lodging in the school hostels were not allowed to return to their respective hometowns in order to protect the students & their families back at home. You see, my students come from all over Sarawak, so their long journeys home would put them at significant risk to COVID exposure.

Jarod Yonghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15461649372779136460noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-23327040.post-55129261933742831422021-05-05T14:50:00.011+08:002021-11-08T02:52:40.823+08:00RM810 Mobile Reloads For Girls Stuck At Hotel

Just finished sending RM10 worth of mobile reloads to each of the 81 girls stuck in the hostels while schools in Kuching are closed to help with the mobile data needed for PDPR online classes.

Thank you to everyone who sponsored my students with this Gift Of Learning!

In Sarawak, schools in red zones have been closed for the past 2 weeks. For most students, you stay at home when the school is closed. For boarding students, you have to stay at the school hostel to protect you & also your loved ones. While you're boarding, the school will take care of all your physical needs, with 5 meals a day & study facilities. However, there is one essential item that schools are not equipped to provide: a broadband internet connection.

When one student got cut off during my online class because she ran out of data & had no more credit to purchase more data, I realised that there may be more in her situation, so I asked permission from past sponsors to use their funds for this purpose. Fortunately, all of them agreed! Thanks!

P/S: I'm giving it to the boys too but I'm still waiting for their name list! Cikgu Matthew Apok is the kind of teacher who would accept all responsibilities assigned to him & work hard to deliver on all of them. <strike>ahem… unlike me</strike>

You will not find him taking pictures of his work & sharing it on social media <strike>ahem… unlike me</strike> or even in the school WhatsApp group. Once he has completed a mission, he would quietly fade away onto the next task, rarely receiving recognition or praise for his numerous contributions throughout the years. This is the kind of teacher I want to see nominated for this award: The unseen ones who work hard behind the scenes while others benefit from their work.

As a football coach, he had the arduous task of building the basics in the junior players who might have plenty of technical skills, but very little in terms of teamwork, tactics, & strategy. His work with these state athletes enabled them to excel in the mental aspects of the sport once they mature into the upper forms. Additionally, he has built an ice pool for our athletes to soak in after competitions to hasten their post-match physical recovery.

As a Bahasa Melayu teacher, he used to teach the most challenging SPM classes with creative & innovative teaching methods to help student athletes who are not academically inclined to comprehend & excel the must-pass paper. He often conducts extra classes in afternoons, evenings, & even weekends.

I have worked personally with him on many projects & he is the senior teacher I want to be for my juniors. I remember fondly working with him on MC scripts for several school events. He would complete the Malay scripts early, so I had something to refer to when I did the English versions. This was extremely refreshing as I am often thrown into the deep end by my seniors.

I remember being able to count on him to be on time, complete responsibilities thoroughly, & leave only when the job is done. Needless to say, I felt a deep loss the day that he transferred to a school back in his hometown.

Nonetheless, I’m grateful that he was a part of my life & I can finally give him some recognition for how much he has inspired me. I hope that everyone reading this will think of a teacher who has inspired you &, please, nominate them for this award too.

Be sure to submit your nomination(s) before 18 April here:
https://www.mcdonalds.com.my/anugerahguruinspirasi/nominate
